Avanti Destinations: Puerto MadrynDay 1 Puerto MadrynGreeting at the Trelew Airport and 40 mile transfer to your selected hotel in Puerto Madryn. Between October to March it is recommended that you arrive by 9:15 am so that you can see Punta Tombo the same day. From Puerto Madryn it is a two hour drive through arid Patagonian landscape to Punta Tombo. Along the way it is possible to see guanacos, ostriches, foxes, and many Patagonian sheep. Upon arrival at Punta Tombo, you will have a guided hike that will take you close to the penguin nesting area where more than 500,000 Magellan penguins gather every year. Many species of marine birds build their nests in this area including seagulls, petrels, Antarctic pigeons, skuas, vapor ducks, chorlos, cormorants and little seagulls. The tour continues to Gaiman, a town that maintains is Welsh cultural and historical tradition, with buildings that date back to its 19th century Welsh colonization. They still observe a traditional Welsh Tea. Take this opportunity to sample the unique local cuisine in a Teahouse. Leaving Gaiman, the tour will take you to Trelew, the major population center in the Chubut River Valley, where you will have a city tour. Late afternoon return to Puerto Madryn to overnight.Centrally Located Hotel In Puerto Madryn, (D)Day 2 Puerto MadrynAfter breakfast, depart for a full-day excursion to Peninsula Valdes. The drive will take you through the Carlos Arneghino Isthmus, dividing the sea into the San Jose gulf to the north, and the Nuevo Gulf to the south. Your destination is Puerto Piramides, a small town on the Nuevo Gulf, surrounded by unique cliffs resembling pyramids. During the months of July through November, you can take an optional whale-watching excursion by boat. Continue towards Caleta Valdes where you will find spectacular viewpoints from cliffs overlooking the ocean. Continue to Punta Delgada, an old lighthouse that has been converted into a hotel, for lunch. After lunch, the return to Puerto Madryn will give you an opportunity to see salt pits. Your tour guide will tell you about the history of San Jose Fort and the salt extraction from the salt pits. In this area it is possible to see maras (Patagonian hare), guanacos, foxes and skunks.
