The center of the city is 9 de Julio Square, around which some of the most important buildings in the city are situated. You will also find the main hotels, bars, and restaurants. During the tour you will see the Church and Monastery of San Francisco, rebuilt in the mid XVllI century, declared Minor Main Church by the Vatican in 1997. Experience the Cabildo and Historic Museum of the Northwest. Get an up close view of the San Bernardo Monastery which boasts a carob-tree main gate considered a colonial art jewel. Finally, the Italian-style building of the Main Church, built in the XX century, that houses the mortal remains of the hero of the Independence Wars, General Martín Miguel de Güemes. The tour goes on towards the outskirts of the city, up to San Bernardo Hill, where the Monument to General Martin Miguel de Güemes stands tall. Las Conchas is also known as the Cafayate River Gorge, whose reddish sandstone walls and curious rock formations have been masterfully carved by the eroding action of wind and weather. Cafayate is surrounded by rivers and vineyards, boasting some of the most beautiful and imposing views in the province. It's worth a visit to the parish church, the Town Hall, and the Regional and Archaeologic Museum. Visit a famous winery to get in touch with the traditional production techniques and seize the chance to taste some of the finest Argentine wines.
